Scott's Bar

Scott’s Pub, situated in the Grund, can be considered to be something of an institution, having long attracted a mixed crowd from European and International school students to American GIs and native Luxembourgers. In the past few years a couple of things have changed, with the place offering a new, expanded sun terrace and an increase in drinks promotions and theme nights, including English language stand-up comedy, which has been difficult to come by in the Grand Duchy in the past. However, it seems unlikely that people would visit Luxembourg for the comedy. It hardly rivals Montreal as a Mecca of mirth.

So what does Scott’s offer? It isn’t the most comfortable or atmospheric place. The décor and fittings, in the style of any generic British pub, haven’t changed in twenty years, and are somewhat careworn and shabby: a returning visitor may be forgiven for thinking they’ve stepped into a time warp. The staff are multilingual (and sport possibly the longest aprons in Luxembourg) and the selection of draught beers is very good, but these were always the case in Scott’s. Again, nothing new, unless you count the fact that they now serve ice-cream.

From a business point of view, not much needs to change. On weeknights and weekend afternoons, the venue remains busy thanks to regulars and a convenient location for passing trade, so close to the bottom of the elevator into the Grund from the Plateau de Sainte Esprit. The biggest problem for Scott’s is that there is no real reason to go: there’s nothing on offer than can’t be found elsewhere, in somewhat more convivial surroundings. Except for the comedy of course…
